Darebin Art Prize 2021

My drawing Susurrus was a finalist in the Darebin Art Prize in 2021.

In Susurrus I wanted to create a gently undulating visual field, exploring the tensions between repetition and disruption of forms, and how the subtle accumulations of variance and accordance allow the whole and the parts to murmur and sift against each other.

This drawing was inspired by the small movements and rich textures of visual phenomena from the natural world; grasses, shifting leaves, water ripples. I wanted to recreate an equivalence for the sensation of looking and contemplation in nature, an openness of the senses as well as a feeling of immersion.
